Schools success for Rainford Tennis Club

(May 30, 2010)

Every Tuesday evening, Rainford Tennis Club host an After School Club for local school children, in partnership with the local schools.

The session, which has been funded by St Helens Schools Sports Partnership, has seen over 40 children attending every week and enjoying tennis sessions ran by Head Coach, Steve Vincent.

Throughout the year, St Helens Schools Sports Partnership, with funding from the Big Lottery and the Tennis Foundation, ensure that coaches from Tennis Clubmark venues, including Rainford Tennis Club, go into schools to deliver tennis sessions to primary and secondary school children.

“Following these sessions, children are encouraged to continue playing tennis and the After School Club has been a great way of encouraging youngsters to come down to Rainford Tennis Club” said Head Coach, Steve Vincent, who delivers sessions at Rainford High School, Brook Lodge, Rainford C of E, Bleak Hill and Eccleston Mere.

In addition, Primary Schools Teachers Courses have been organised by the Tennis Foundation, with bags of AEGON Schools Tennis equipment being donated to all the schools who have attended.  There are also Primary and Secondary Schools Tennis Competitions in St Helens each summer, with more teams entering each year.

Each year a Tennis Leaders Award, takes place to train secondary school children to help deliver tennis coaching and competitions.  This year’s Tennis Leaders have been helping deliver the After School Club every Tuesday.

“There is more tennis taking place in schools in St Helens than ever before” added Steve. “We are keen for as many children as possible from across the town to play our great sport and having strong links with local schools really helps us increase the number of young people playing tennis.”
