Leaders boost tennis in St Helens

(August 11, 2010)
Tennis coaching and competitions in St Helens are benefitting from the skills of young people who have attended the Tennis Leaders Award.

The course has trained up youngsters from the local schools and tennis clubs, giving them the skills to assist in the running of coaching and competitions.

The recent St Helens Schools Tennis Competition, which was held at Rainford High Technology College, was supported by the Tennis Leaders, who acted as referees and umpires at the tournament.

In addition, the Tennis Leaders have been helping with after-school, beginner, coaching sessions at Rainford Tennis Club, which is attended by over forty children every week.

“The Tennis Leaders Award has been invaluable for the growth of tennis in the St Helens area” said Steve Vincent, who delivered the training course.

“Without the Tennis Leaders, we wouldn’t be able to run as much activity as we do and have as many children participating in tennis as there currently are in the area.”

“These young people are the future coaches and competition organisers and we are hoping that as many of them as possible move onto the Level 1 Coaching Assistant course in the next few years.”
